His back was broken in the fall that crushed his arm and leg, and his spine has been replaced with a synthetic one. Nerve damage has also been repaired, and he made a full recovery.
He has a dragon tattoo on his right shoulder blade, and a compass tattoo on his left wrist. (He used to have his family crest tattooed on the inside of his right wrist but after he lost that part of his arm, he didn't want the tattoo to be replicated because he thought it would have been too weird.)
In the future, he will be dyeing the longer parts of his hair in this color scheme.
Anastasia, the only woman aside from his mother that Amery has ever loved. Clearly the way to capture his heart is to be a dragon made of metal.

While still larger than the largest horse and with an impressive wingspan, her design is sleek and aerodynamic. Her design is not only for speed, but also for fire (though she has less of a capacity for the fuel needed than the larger dragons, she still carries an impressive amount).
The metal she is made of has been specially designed to help her blend into the sky and other surroundings, so that both dragon and rider can fly undetected by those below them.
When addressing others, Anastasia is generally well-mannered and polite. However, between just her and Amery, she's just as much of a snarky little shit as he is. This is why they get along well. That and the fact that she's something like an older sister to Amery. As he sees Anastasia more often than he does the rest of his family she's one of the closest people in his life.
Every dragon and rider is linked by a chip. They are told that this chip will help to bond them to their dragon. This is not true. The bond is formed naturally between man and machine. The chip serves for their mental connection, allowing them to communicate without verbal words. Readouts are displayed on the goggles that each airman wears, including conversations, observations, and the dragon's status. This link also works the other way, in which the dragon is aware of the rider's observations and status. Yes, this is overwhelming sometimes and yes, it takes a long time to get used to at first.
However, while the chip means that dragons are first of all loyal to their riders, the dragons are still very difficult to control otherwise. If the dragons can't be controlled, then maybe their riders can, which is where the chips come in. While they're not perfect mind control, in the case that the airmen might rebel against their leader, it's an attempt to control them before things come to violence.
Amery was born in Volstov in a small town outside of the capital city of Thremedon, in a large house, to a rich family. Vallet is an old name with old money. They even have a family crest. As such, Amery's first language is Volstovic. While Amery was growing up, he also started to learn Ramanthine and Ke-Han, in preparation to go to the university. He was also determined, as the eldest child, to bring honor to his family. He was nine when his younger brother Balfour was born.
At a young age, not too long after the birth of his sibling, he was sent out of the country to a prestigious school in the city to get a good education. He also took English while he was there. He was sixteen when he lost his virginity. It wasn't planned, and he might have been drinking. There was a party thrown by classmates, and a girl that he had a serious crush on was there. One thing led to another, and he ended up having sex with her. Something he regretted after the fact because he felt that she deserved better than that. They remained friends after that for a few more years.
When Amery was eighteen, he got the first two of his tattoos; his family crest on the inside of his right wrist and a compass on the inside of his left. Eighteen was also the first time that he realized he had feelings for another man. However, when he finally got up the nerve to confess his feelings for Phalen (while Amery was also drunk), Phalen reacted very badly. Having no tolerance for the offensive slurs and insults hurled his way, Amery reacted with violence. They fought, and Amery ended up breaking Phalen's arm. The incident was eventually ruled as an accident and no charges were pressed.
Despite, or perhaps in part because of this, when Amery was nineteen, he was given the opportunity to be a part of a new experimental branch of the military, should the other subject approve of him. The other subject turned out to be a metal dragon and Anastasia very much approved of Amery. He was captivated with her the moment that he saw her and of course agreed.

The impact caused Amery to lose his grip and fall from Anastasia. Some of the loose concrete and rebar fell on him, crushing his right arm from the elbow down and his entire left leg.
To make matters worse, not only was he aware of Anastasia's distress, damaged as she was (and realizing that it was her fault that he was hurt worse), but she was completely aware of his. So while Amery was screaming in pain, Anastasia was thrashing about, making her own injuries worse in her attempts to get to him and help him. She did manage to get the debris off of him, but when she tried to pick him up, it only made things worse. At least, considering the destruction they accidentally caused, most of the rioters scattered and help was able to arrive. However, help had to deal with a panicked dragon, and they eventually had to temporarily shut her down so that they could get both Anastasia and Amery out of there safely.
Amery's arm and leg were injured too badly to be saved, so they were amputated and replaced with synthetic parts. His spine was also replaced, and there was nerve damage that had to be repaired or else he would have been at risk of never being able to walk again if it had been left to heal on its own. The damage done to Anastasia was also repaired, though it took weeks before they were both back in the sky, because Amery had a considerable bit of resting and physical therapy to go through before he was fit for flying again.
This incident is why Amery then took to wearing a pair of emergency wings when he went flying from that point on. If he ever fell again, he would be able to fly instead of fall, and wouldn't risk more injury or death. And so that he wouldn't panic every time he had to get on his dragon again.
While no one can actually tell that his replaced limbs are synthetic, since they match perfectly, he's still incredibly self-conscious about them, especially when he has to get them repaired. Which is fairly often, as Amery can be considerably reckless at times, and that paired with his short temper means he ends up getting himself into rough situations every now and then. He views his synthetic parts as reminders of how he failed his girl, even though they both recovered fine in the end. He still has nightmares about it, though far less frequently than he did right after it happened.
On the third floor, Amery's bedroom (with a small walk in closet) and master bathroom, except the windows are actually a large monitor that can display any scenery or imagery that he wants.
